I'm excited to be back! Recently, I took a short break and embarked on a familiar trip to Sedona, Arizona with my sister. It turned out to be a lovely way to welcome the new year!
During our visit, we explored a trail or two, witnessed some truly stunning sights, did some inner work with a Reiki session, indulged in some tasty meals, and experienced unexpected snowfall. We also did some window shopping, and particularly sought out Native American jewelry. The craftsmanship of Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo silversmiths has once again left me feeling incredibly inspired.
From my earliest memories, my mother instilled in me a deep respect and admiration for Native American peoples, their customs, and cultures. Our frequent visits to the Southwest were a testament to her appreciation. She consistently supported indigenous artists by acquiring their artworks and jewelry. Growing up with this influence, I developed a special affinity for Native American silver jewelry, as the inspiration is evident in my more recent work, such as this overlay necklace here.
On this recent trip, while perusing a jewelry shop, my sister and I formed an instant connection with the owners—a married couple—and their shop assistant. Engaging in delightful conversation as we explored the shop, we discovered their warmth and kindness. The collection of Native American jewelry they offered was, without a doubt, the most exquisite we had encountered thus far.
As we wandered through the shop, I came upon a gorgeous hardcover book featuring 12 renowned Hopi jewelers, with stunning photographs. I was captivated and spent a considerable amount of time with it. The shop owners must’ve taken notice of my fascination.
Upon reaching the checkout counter with my sister, we talked a bit more with the owners. As we started to say our farewells and head towards the exit, the owner raised a finger and asked me to wait. Rushing over to the book I had admired, she grabbed it and handed it to me. She said they wanted me to have it as they knew I would appreciate it. I was genuinely taken aback! Despite my attempts to pay, they insisted I accept it as a gift. Their gracious gesture left me feeling deeply honored. Profusely expressing my gratitude, I left the shop, but their generosity has continued to resonate with me in the days that followed.
Truly,
Casey
